Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta launches today Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta launches today

Or Final Fantasy Online 2, if you like.

Final Fantasy XIV, the latest Final Fantasy MMORPG, opens its Beta doors wide today.

It was originally due to open on Tuesday, but a 'critical issue' held it back, so would-be players get the chance to explore Square Enix's strange new world for themselves. Fans of Final Fantasy XI expecting more of the same be warned, though - FFXIV takes a rather different approach, eschewing traditional levels and classes in favour of more freeform character growth. It'll also be cutting off your XP after 8 hours, so don't diving in too deeply.

Head over to the Beta Site to sign up and play. A word of warning, though: The download might take a while...

Did you know...?

It's possible to skip rescuing Deckard Cain in Diablo II, despite the quest's mandatory status. If you don't go back to Tristram to fetch the old dude by the end of Act I, he'll be rescued by the rogues, and you'll have to pay a fee for him to identify your items, which is normally a free service.
